Oushak Rugs - The Stylish, Handmade Option
Turkish Oushak rugs are a great way to inject some affordable glamour into your home. But how can you ensure that you’re buying Oushak rugs which are both traditional and good value? Here are some good tips for selecting those rugs.
Choosing Your Perfect Oushak Rug
The first thing to know when buying a rug, is how to identify the particular style. Oushak rugs are originally from the Turkish area of West Anatolia, although new rugs may be manufactured across Turkey. They tend to be manufactured in earthy colours, from strong to pale, and have abstract patterns of medallions or stars.
Although they are not suitable as carpets, an Oushak rug is a great example of a large area rug. An approximate size would be 6ft x 9ft. The larger rugs are usually patterned with medallions, and are known as Oushak Medallion carpets, while the smaller (and rarer) carpets have patterns of stars and are known as Star Oushak carpets.
While an original Oushak rug from the 16th and 17th Centuries can cost tens of thousands of dollars, new rugs manufactured in the same style are a much more inexpensive option. While online shopping is an option, it can be a good idea to go to a rug dealer to see as many examples as you can. This way you can get the best idea of the colours and the size of the rug, to evaluate whether that particular Oushak rug will look good in your home.
