Although they’re not handmade, Karastan area rugs have the craftsmanship of hand woven rugs. This is because Karastan’s custom area rugs are made on a special loom.  In fact, the loom is so special that the trade press of the 1930s began to refer to Karastan rugs as ‘mystery rugs’. So Karastan decided to prove that the mystery held true, and to this end they manufactured a giant rug for the 1933 - 34 World Fair in Chicago.  Over five million people walked on this rug, and then just half the rug was cleaned. The difference was remarkable – the cleaned side looked almost as good as new, even after millions had stepped on it. To prove this wasn’t a fluke, Karastan made a new rug for the 1939 – 40 World Trade Fair in New York. Several million more walked on this rug, but the same results ensued.
